This past Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the cooperage, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition returned once again to Sonoma State to spark laughter from the audience. Associated Student Productions  (ASP) produced the event and comedians were provided by John Fox, producer of the San Francisco Comedy Competition and owner of the talent agency, Just for Laughs.

The first San Francisco International Comedy Competition took place in 1976, where well renowned comedian, Robin Williams took second place and Bob Sarlatte, now the On-Field Master of Ceremonies for the San Francisco 49ers finished in third place. Many comedians have competed in this competition from Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, and DL Hughley to Sinbad, Mark Curry and Steven Wright including many others.

Thousands of comedians from around the world have competed in this competition in the hopes of winning $30,000 and being crowned the first place winner.

The headliner for the Comedy Competition was Los Angeles known comedian Moshe Kasher. He has won the Best of Fest at the Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival and has also been featured on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham, The Independent Film Channel, Jamie Foxx's Laffapalooza, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival and much more. He will also soon appear on the Chelsea Lately television show.

ASP Programming Assistant, Angelina Guttierez shared her insight on the purpose of having "The Best of San Francisco Comedy Competition" come to Sonoma State University and how the competition began at Sonoma State.

"We want to provide cheap fun events for students on campus. Why not come out? These events are put on using student fee money so might as well take advantage of them," stated Angelina.
"ASP has known the producer John Fox for a long time. He takes the competition on tour and since we're so close to San Francisco they are happy to come out."

Associated Student Productions Programming Assistant, Nick Hamre explained what he wants the audience to get out of the event.

"I want the audience to have fun and be proud of their campus. Our goal at ASP is to keep a smile on the face of all of the fellow students."

The Comedy Competition delivered what it was set out to do, to make everyone in the room laugh. Aside from the main comedian, there were also two other comedians that came out to show the audience a good time.
