The Sonoma State dance team will showcase its talent and versatility during its annual spring dance show "THE FINAL CUT" scheduled for May 8 and 9. Their show will feature multiple dance styles including hip hop, lyrical and tap.
The team's amount of versatility and talent is something co-captain Julia Machado is very proud of.
"This show will be a step up from our shows in the past," she said. "This year we have really experienced girls. A lot of them have competed on their high school teams. The girls are really good."
The 17-girl dance team will perform about 16 dance numbers, culminating in an hour and a half show. There will be a combination of group performances, solos and trios, describes Machado. Each dancer is in about seven to eight numbers, giving each girl the chance to highlight what they are best at.
All of the dances are choreographed by girls on the team. This show will really showcase all the talent and creativity the SSU dance team has to offer. It is all run and coordinated by the team; it is wholly their project.
Besides choreographing, rehearsing and performing in the show, each member is also involved in other areas of putting the show up: costumes, makeup, publicity and the like.
"Every girl has to play a role; do something for the team. Everyone contributed. We did it all, everyone had a part," said Machado. She expressed that the effort and dedication of the entire team makes this show all the more special and meaningful for each member.
The SSU Dance Team, is used to taking charge of itself. This year, the team has no coach; it is student run by junior Julia Machado and sophomore Jaime Harris. First year member and freshman, Laura Wagner has full faith in her captains.
"We are good as a self run team. We don't really need a coach," said Wagner. "Jaime is the sweetest girl. Julia too. They are on top of everything. A lot of the older girls took charge a lot more."
Since the team is student run, its success depends on the dedication of all of its members. Machado assures that dedication is not a problem.
"Our team gets last priority pick to use these rooms [dance rooms in the rec center]. So we have rehearsals at 10 p.m. and don't get out until like 12 a.m. The girls must really love it, they are dedicated even with these crazy rehearsal times."
