Her name was Osceola Macarthy Adams, she was the first African American to be on Broadway. During the time, the color of one’s skin was everything and often determined whether or not one could enter events, bathrooms, restaurants and even theatres. Because Osceola was a fairly light skinned African-American woman, she would often disguise herself as white in order to get into the theatre. Throughout her journey in becoming an actress, Osceola experienced discrimination left and right because of her skin color, but she didn’t let that stop her. Because of her, actors and actresses no matter their skin color can be successful both on and off Broadway.
