While the average campus resident here at Sonoma State may spend their evenings channel surfing rather than working on homework or starting that research paper due tomorrow, they may be surprised to find an interesting station with familiar faces doing crazy activities right in their own backyard, literally.

In the past, Sonoma State Television, or SSUTV, was much simpler. With the menu to Charlie Browns running during prime time, many students became used to flipping past it.

However, Channel 27 has gone under an extreme makeover over the past year. They have revamped their style, advertising and programming all together to something far beyond ads for Amici’s set to elevator music.

“It is so much better than last year,” said sophomore Julia Halloran, who spent almost all of her free time during winter intersession watching the new programming.

“I’ve really enjoyed the new changes. Even though it may not be the best quality, it is so entertaining and fun to see people you recognize, like, ‘Hey, I have class with that guy!’”

On their web site, SSUTV says they strive to provide “Television programming created by students for students.” Shows have the added appeal of being written, directed and performed by people students see every day: their peers.

Some of these new programs include live virtual news and sports, SSUTV originals, events, new short films, music spotlight and coverage of on-campus events. Definitely something for everyone.

SSUTV is an upper division class in the communications department designed for students interested in perusing broadcast journalism and entertainment. A group of 30 students work to keep SSUTV running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
