Students create Spanish literary magazine

As the school year comes to a close, with summer fast approaching, many may take a minute to stop and enjoy the little things in life— to put the stress of finals and finding a summer job aside and take a look at what the year has brought, where we fell short and where we excelled.

While most people relish the opportunities to sell their books back or throw away their old notebooks full of the boring lecture notes they never want to lay eyes on again, two Sonoma State students have decided to bring together their peers for a certain project that has been gathering a great deal of momentum, and yielding impressive results.

Gabriela Buchholz Athens and Pamela Santagada have come together to create a Spanish literary magazine that focuses on the works of fellow Spanish students at Sonoma State. The name of the magazine is called "Voces del Corazon" (voices of the heart) and has been a very important project to both of the students.

These two have worked hard on their magazine and have, so far, collected works of several fellow students, with hopes of having more submitted very soon.

The works are composed of many different themes and genres, each with its own unique story behind it and the student's story in it. Athens talked about what the magazine meant to her and what she wanted it to be.

"Our goal is to provide a venue for the Spanish language works of our community and to motivate people to put themselves out there and expose their talents."

The idea was to have other students submit work that they have done in their lives, leaving the magazine open toward all sorts of possibilities and people.

The magazine came as an idea to the two ladies after encouraging support from their professor Elizabeth Martinez, who would normally hand back students' papers with letters of encouragement written on them.

"We know that the knowledge and support of this project would only grow if future students were to continue with it in the semesters to come.  As such, we hope that others are inspired to do so."

Athens elaborated on the support received for the magazine.

"The success of our fundraising efforts is due entirely to the community-mindedness and generosity of the local population.  Our kind local market Oliver's provided us with a venue and a substantial raffle prize to solicit donations from their friendly and interested customers. With their help, we were able to reach our funding needs for this publication and, as such, will be able to offer multiple free copies of ‘Voces del corazón' to those who participate in the project."
