Spring is nearly here and bringing new fashion trends. In an attempt to brush up on fashion styles for spring, I have been looking through various magazines and websites, such as Vogue, and New York Magazine Spring 2007 Fashion issue. I also sat down and talked with self-proclaimed fashion lovers, and Sonoma State freshmen, Emily Kerns and Alicia Brogdon.

For those students who do not have the time to read the magazines, or talk with fashion savvy students like I have, here is the general consensus of what I learned is in style for Spring:

Dresses: Last Spring, long, flowy skirts were the rage of the season for women's fashion. This spring, the most commonly agreed upon fashion trend is wearing casual dresses. Light, airy dresses that look like t-shirts, and t-shirts that resemble dresses are both in style. Dresses with high waistlines that come down to the mid-thigh or knee are the most popular. The most popular patterns are floral and retro patterns that look like they are from the seventies or eighties. However, whether it's short or long, floral print or solid, loose and flowy or tight and sophisticated, if it is a dress, it is in style.

"Wearing a shorter dress with leggings is nice. Also, jersey dresses or dresses that look like t-shirts are cute. I am seeing a lot of people wearing a short dress, with a high waist belt, and leggings. This outfit looks best with heels at night, and flat ballerina shoes during the day," said Alicia Brogdon, freshman.

High waistlines: In other words, say no to crack. The most significant change in fashion trends seems to be higher waistlines. It might have been easy to see this fashion change coming, considering low rise jeans have gotten to the lowest point possible. Pants, dresses and skirts this spring generally have higher waistlines.

"Higher waist belts, pants and dresses are coming in style," said Emily Kerns, freshman.

"Personally, I don't know how I feel about high waist pants. I guess we will see if this trend happens."

Bright colors: New York Magazine compared accessory and dress colors to the bright colors of candy and sugary desserts in their Spring 2007 fashion issue. Blue is the must-have bright color for the season. However, when it comes to spring colors, as long as it is bright, it's alright. In addition to blue, bright reds, oranges, greens, yellows and pinks and are in style for men and women.

"Bright colors are in, and it does not really matter what color it is. I love wearing bright colors, especially bright pink," Kerns said.

Big sunglasses: For the past few springs and summers, big sunglasses have been extremely popular. I questioned Kerns and Brogdon about the rumors circulating that these types of sunglasses are going out of style. In spite of the controversy, according to the general consensus, big sunglasses are still in.

"I still see everyone wearing big sunglasses. I have worn big sunglasses since eighth grade, so I won't let them go out of style," said Kerns.

"I don't like big sunglasses too much. Some people pull them off well though. You have to make sure they look right on you before getting them," Brodgon said.

Men's Fashion: Believe it or not, many of these styles, such as bright colors, actually do apply to men's fashion as well. In addition, basic shades of tan and white colors are in style for men this season. According to New York Magazine, mismatched, casual suits with loosened ties and rolled up sleeves are in style for men as well.

Kerns thinks that men's fashion takes a backseat to women's fashion at Sonoma State. "I don't think guy's fashion really changes here," she said.

According to Brogdon, one fashion faux pas for men is to wear shorts with tall socks and tennis shoes. "That is one fashion problem I do not want to see on guys this Spring," she said.

Be yourself when you dress. Fashion is always changing and the most important thing to consider is whether you personally like something or not. Technically, fashion is only really a matter of opinion. So, whether you chose to follow fashion trends or choose not to pay attention at all, the most fashionable thing to do this Spring is to be comfortable, and be yourself.
