Interim Chief of Police, Sally Miller has replaced former Chief of Police, Nate Johnson, who was recently named Chief Law Enforcement Offer for the California State University system.

Miller has worked in law enforcement since 1985 as a police aid for Contra Costa Community College District Police. She graduated with honors from the Contra Costa Criminal Justice Training Center Police Academy and was sworn in as a police officer in the University of California San Francisco Police Department in 1988.

She has also worked as an officer with the Sonoma County Junior College District Police until she was promoted to police detective in 1999 and police sergeant in 2006. Miller was hired as Deputy Chief of Police at SSU in 2008.

She met up with the Star for an interview to discuss her new job.

The Star: How long will you serve as interim Chief of Police?

Miller: I'll be here until they do a nationwide search for a permanent chief. There are some interims that have done it for four years.

If the chief of police position were offered to you permanently, would you accept it?

I don't know. [Pauses] I'm committed to SSU and to doing whatever needs to be done to serve the community in law enforcement.

What was the transition like from deputy to chief?

I'll let you know. I'm still working as deputy as well because the position has not yet been backfilled.

What do you do at SSU?

I fight crime and laugh in the face of danger. [Laughs] My job is to ensure that we are working with and within the community to keep it safe.

What is Police Services responsible for?

We are responsible for planning events, managing police personnel, and making observations to determine where to focus our efforts.
