There have been few moments in my life that have made me speechless. ...Or so I thought.
That was before I decided to journey to another country last summer and experience first hand changes in culture.
While I dared myself to study abroad, I found more truth than I could have ever imagined- both as a person and as a U.S. citizen. It was July 18, that I boarded the plane, destined half way around the world to Cape Town, South Africa. There I would spend five weeks emerged in both the history and culture of the Southern Cape. A group of 21 other students and I took part in a service-learning project, which allowed us access to some of the most eye-opening places imaginable.
During our five-week stay, each SSU student would be responsible for a child, teaching them English and mathematics at a middle school level.
Tutoring the children of Khayelitsha, one of multiple townships that populated the country, gave us a direct connection into the heart of the average South African
In turn, this experience gave us the chance to examine the differences among average Americans.
