Derek Bok, a former president of Harvard University, once observed, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance!” Indeed, if we let down a whole generation of Californians by not educating them properly, what will there be for them to do besides run for governor?

It’s also been said “Don’t get mad – get even.” Well, coming up on March 4 is your chance to get even for the way your education has been screwed up.

Let’s face it, students: Sonoma State University isn’t the place it’s been in the past, and you’re not getting the kind of education you would have gotten in the past even though you’re paying more.

You’re paying one-third more in fees, there are no new Cal Grants, and scholarship programs have been cut. The faculty and staff are getting paid almost 10 percent less in exchange for nine “furlough days” per semester that they didn’t ask for. Enrollments will be cut 10 percent next year. Over 40,000 qualified Californians will be denied admission.

The campus budget is $16 million less than last year’s, which was already bare bone.
